Wonderful post. I will probably never find that line between what is necessary and calming and what must be suppressed because it is disruptive, dangerous, whatever. And the definitions keep shifting for us: something that is fine at one age becomes extremely weird a few months later, as you aptly noted.

Been there. Eternally doing this.

Wonderful post! I often ask myself many of these same questions. And once a wrote a post about why my husband couldn't seem to learn to fold the towels correctly so that I always feel compelled to unfold and re-fold every single one of them after his turn at doing the laundry!! Really! You'd think he would just learn to do it the right way!

Although I absolutely adore Arie's teacher, she said something that caught me up short: she stops hand-flapping, spinning, and echolalia.

I'm like DOOD this is what he does instead of throwing things, screaming, spitting, and threatening! I'm all about stimming that does not involve objects hurtling through the air or innapropriate, germy moisture!

She said, well, he has to fit into society.

And I said: "Why?"

And she and my husband rolled their eyes at each other.

Okay.

You are right, there are funny bits,
where mom's own weaknesses surface.

Shall we examine them under a magnifying glass? A microscope?

Some other way of closely scrutinizing and distinguishing between "normal" vs. "weird"?

Ms. Whitterer, you are doing an admirable job of surviving while dealing with what amounts to parenting hell.

Your kids will be what they will be... You just have to protect them from the bumps in the road? Hostile and misunderstanding general public?

Lordy, the news with the poor, damaged Korean kid with a green card: that bothers me in so many directions. You too?

Well, no point here, just, hopefully seen as -- support.

Have you read the entirety of the Anne Porter poem I posted about? It is lovely, if you wish I will email you a copy, off blog.

All the best!

TL

Been there... still doing that...

Just an FYI.. I'd love to say that self-destructive behaviours end with full verbal skills... but they don't.. unfortunately.

S.
