This reminds me of the early days of my son's speech delay when I did searches for echolalia and could only find sites for autism -- which he clearly didn't have, right? So, I would search for "echolalia -autism" and started finding... Not a heck of a lot.

And so sorry, just catching up -- terribly (perpetually, as usual) behind on my reading!

Hi. I don't know what is crazier having someone trying to tell you that its not autism or trying to convince yourself. I have been doing that lately in the case of my two year old and the sad part it, she may not be as severe as my boy, but its there, she started toe walking today. Down the rabbit hole again.

I like the idea of people landing here after searching for "Not Autism." I like to think that reading some of what you have written about your children, their insights and humor, the energy and depth and humanity portrayed here, will allow some to stop looking so much for "not" and see the beauty in what is.

That is a fantastic picture. Look at those happy, smiling faces! I'm sure you must look at them and think that you're the luckiest person in the world. And really, we all are, aren't we?

I remember going in for Heidi's 18 month old check up and talking to the maternal and child health nurse about my concerns.

As I listed them all and we went through the checklist of developmental milestones the word 'autism' start whispering in my head. Then the nurse said it. Took us another 12 months and much more testing to really come to grips with the reality.

What is the reality? No matter what her label she is still the amazing, funny, wonderful little girl she was before. But now we can get help so that she actually learns to sleep at night, so we can communicate with each other, life is less frustrating and much calmer now and yet it is more frustrating and crazy as well.
