Frugal Food – one week’s worth

Try This Tuesday

I don’t know what happens in your household, but around here my children would be quite happy to eat pizza or pasta every night of the week, for a month, probably several months.

Tuesday – baked potatoes with sour cream and chives, pan fried sausages [bake extra potatoes to use in Frittata tomorrow/make double and freeze as side dish/ save one sausage for the Frittata]
Wednesday – Frittata with green salad and Winter coleslaw [make double coleslaw to add to tomorrow]
Thursday – Cheesy Rice with Kale and Winter Coleslaw [double the boiled rice, save half and freeze for later – Monday]
Friday – Fisherwoman’s Pie, pastry topped, include a cup of peas and corn to have a one pot dish and save washing up. [set up beans to sprout for Monday]
Saturday – Egg, Spinach and Potato Curry, serve with bread or Naans [make double to freeze but omit the eggs]
Sunday – Roast chicken and potatoes with roasted root vegetables [double the veg to use in cous cous later, strip the chicken bare[!] , refridgerate left over meat, make stock from the carcass for cous cous and freeze the rest for soup]
Monday – Stir Fried rice with the left over chicken, Beansprouts with Sesame seeds

The point here is to try and keep one or two steps ahead of the starving masses. Anyway, enough of such irrelevancies as nobody is interested in what we’re eating this week. However, it may just be that a few people may be mightily interested to know that my son, the former neophobe, will also be eating this menu, this week.

“Who?”

“Him!”

Don’t forget to keep your eyes and ideas open to “Jessica.”

    Wow!
Congratulations! I would want to eat too if I was going to be eating that yummy spread!

  2. Tanya @ TeenAutism:

Thanks for the links to your previous posts! I found one I had missed, in which I learned that “picky eaters” eat 20 or more foods. Both of my boys are still working on achieving that status!

  3. Faith:

Great advice about staying ahead of the starving masses. I know if I have something already prepared for my kids they’re less likely to complain vs waiting for me to fix something(more time to whine about it I suppose, LOL).

  4. Bishops Wife:

I doubt I could even cook that stuff.

My kids made a fantastic meatloaf the other night. They squished it just right.

    Mine are very picky eaters.

Where is this restaurant again? Sounds delish! lol

You are speaking to a woman who shops daily, cooks the same thing every week, and finds anyway she can to not make veg. Thanks for making me feel worse! Hee hee…..oh, and stops at the local fast food joint at least 2 to 3 times a week to make my spoiled boy happy!

  6. Carey:

    Now that’s organized!

  7. The Happy Housewife:

Your menu looks great. Roasted chicken is a favorite around here!

Seems that you are making wise use of your time. Good Plan!

  9. Stacy:

My kids would be happy to eat peanut butter sandwiches and yogurt for each meal every day. Trying to get them to eat veggies is really hard, but I try. I have a recipe list that I try to keep to, as well. That helps me stay ahead and try to keep my sanity, too. :)

    BTW, your menu sounds yummy!

My kids would eat fruit and yogurt for every meal if I didn’t cook. J would toss in some mac n cheese.
Thankfully J will eat meats if they are not too spicey. So to save money and time, I always cook double meat in the crockpot and freeze the leftovers.
If we aren’t in the mood for the same type of thing, I will open a large pack of meat and split it between two crocks and add a different seasoning to each. 2 meals, little prep, and no heat transfer to the house.

Your menu looks delicious, but no one in this house but me would eat it.

  11. Tanya:

You’re right! It is so hard to keep ahead of things, but so much nicer when you do! Great tackle!

  12. pixiemama:

You astound me. Yes, you. I gave up on food. They eat what they eat. I can’t lose our entire evening while lording over them demanding “EAT! EAT!” I lost the will. They won the battle. Can I come to your house to eat? I am sick of soup and salad. Your menu has me dreaming…

  13. susieshomemade:

    Love the menu! Great tackle:-)

  14. Brenda:

    Yummy menu! Happy TT!

  15. Melissa:

Yeah, pizza and pasta are big favorites in our house too. How exciting that everyone in the house is eating off of that menu – woo!

  16. Kim:

Mm, your menu is making my mouth water!

  17. Heffalump:

    My kids love pasta too…
    Great ideas, thanks!

  18. Trish @ Another Piece of the Puzzle:

My hubby had gum surgery two weeks ago and has been having mac n cheese or some variation almost every day since then. He can’t wait to go back and get the okay to chew again!

  19. Mary (MPJ):

Wow! Now I’m going to have you come over here and work on our neophobe. I bow down before you in awe! :)

  20. mama mara:

Don’t suppose you’d consider running a boot camp for picky eater/neophobes? I can just picture you: “All right, soldier. Either eat that shepherd’s pie or drop down and give me 20.”

    I need you here.

  21. Frog's Mom:

Wow! I admire your organization. Hooray for the new found appreciation for mom’s good home cooking!!!!!

rice and cheese is a staple comfort food here – my mum made it for me as a kid and i still make it for myself and my son on those days when you want to eat something out of a bowl with a spoon. the kale would be a great addition on days when it was a normal meal but comfort food here has to be pale and mushy…
