Sandpaper is superb! I have often recommended using sandpaper for additional sensory feedback while learning to write letters. There are many ‘grades’ of sandpaper available – fine to course, and as this photo shows, crayons work well AND also require a fair bit of pressure (muscle action) – like heavy work for the hands!

I’ve never thought of that use for sandpaper before but reading Barbara’s post above it soudns like a great idea.
