In our house, we do the 10-Minute Tidy-Up. My ASD son gets into it along with my daughter. We put on a timer for exactly 10 minutes and have a good treat for the end (cookie!). Then... mark, get set, go! The idea is to run as fast as you can, putting as many things away until the dinger goes. When it goes, you stop, no matter how much is left. We don't clean longer than 10 minutes. This makes it fun, like a race, and then you get a treat. It might not work for everyone, but it's good silly fun.

Nigel eventually mastered the playing part, but he never did very well with the picking up - still doesn't! I always have to find a worthwhile motivator - and it's rarely the same thing twice. Oh, well. I've started to get better about looking the other way . . .

If I never got that milestone, I'm not expecting my offspring to do so, either lol.

Brilliant post!

Can I add that, when you have succeed in teaching your child how to play, you will know a lot more about how your child can learn and how you can teach.

I would have said as long as a typical child ;)

Good points you have raised here babe, play is vital. I don't think we place enough emphasis on it.
