But the key here in "habit or ignorance" is ignorance, and once somebody knows how offensive a word like that can be, it stops being culturally-instilled habit and becomes something the person is personally responsible for. Teachers would often admonish the students in my class by calling them that. I remember parents of my friends scolding their kids by calling them a R... Then there were all the countless jokes.
