“I before E, except after C”
“I before E, except after C” and a few other exceptions. There’s quite a few exceptions actually and unless you’re good at remembering lists then maybe a visual might help better……
The ‘e’ will only hang from the branch of the ‘W’ as the ‘i’ would fall off because seeing is believing around here.
……..well for some people at least.

When I competed in spelling bees (and I did right well) I relied more on visualizing the letters than on silly verbal rules. English being the kind of language it is, you’ll never get ‘em _all_ right. I mean, had I known there was a preferred spelling for “knickknack” I might have made it to the national spelling bee.

Thanks for this! We were just talking about this in our homeschool this week–”I before E except after C, or when sounding like A as in neighbor and weigh.”
I will show this picture to the kids.
