Castigation or Encouragement?

I overheard a few things this week.  Things people say to children, very, very small ones.  Generally irrelevant, but there’s some wisdom for tweens, in the last one.

“Don’t talk like that I’m not listening.  Stop whining like a baby.  You’re nearly five, act your age.”

“May god forgive you, I surely won’t.”

“You’ll never get to Harvard if you don’t do your homework.”

“We had another mom in here today with kids in a buggy, almost as loud as yours.  She gave them bananas to shut them up.”

“You’ll never be important enough not to offer someone a helping hand.”

And one more from England, my favorite, which I’ve already adopted:-  “You are the giddy limit.”

That is a real mixed bag right there! Imagine telling someone they need to shut their kids up in such a backhanded/nasty way with the banana comment.

Yes, what is with these four-year olds today?? They should really know better. (Oh, wait, I’m over 40 and I don’t always know better!)

I almost broke out “Don’t make me turn this car around!” yesterday. A family favorite from my childhood, although I suspect my parents lacked the ironic twist I would have to give it.

Even just listening, your brain is always filtering and filing, Maddy. Thinking of you!

The banana comment made me laugh. I had three kids under three, two with special needs. No amount of bananas in the world would have quieted us down. Oh well.

This one is my favorite. “You’ll never be important enough not to offer someone a helping hand.” I truly believe that no matter what are station in life is, we are responsible for each other’s progress and relief.
